Performance CPU Buyers guide: AMD vs. Intel

Written by Alex Ionascu, Posted in Guides

The latest CPUs from Intel have extreme performance written all over them, especially if you can afford a top-of-the line CPU like the i7 980-X Extreme Edition. 6 cores, 12 threads, and 12MB of L3 cache are certainly worth the large price tag, but just consider the fact that, for the price of one i7 980-X Extreme Edition CPU, you could be getting an entire PC with a AMD processor that offers 6 cores as well!

We know, performance wise, the new AMD Thuban core processors don't come very close to Intel's beast, but you're going to have a tough time getting any CPU to use all of its six cores to the maximum anyway, unless you're using your computer for intensive rendering or other CPU consuming tasks, in which case you'll certainly want the fastest CPU available, no matter the cost.
