Alienware M18X R2 to Pack Serious GPU Power

Earlier, information about Dells’ Alienware 2012 lineup has been revealed by a source close to Dell. The information included details about the M14X R2, M17X R4 and M18X R2. Unfortunately, only the color options were revealed for the M18X R2 but now the same source comes back with fresh info about the gaming notebook.

According to the source, the M18X R2 will be fitted with two Radeon HD 7970M in CrossFire or two GeForce GTX 675M in SLI. In addition, the powerful gaming notebook may also come with a GeForce GTX 660M but it is still unconfirmed whether the GPU will be offered as a standalone discrete one or will come in SLI configuration.

The M18X R2 together with the M17X R4 will also have the option to include a Wireless HD (WiHD) Card which enables the full high-definition media experience with uncompressed video and multi-channel surround sound audio.

The concept is actually not new as most high end gaming laptops have two mobile GPUs in CrossFire or SLI configuration.

But still, yeah its pretty awesome!

so the GeForce GTX 660M is for physix set up? holy sh$t! But will all of this GPUs, will this laptop be able to handle the heat generated by all three GPUs? I want to see a laptop with water cooling! Current set up for ventilation for all laptops suck.

The GTX 660M will be offered as an option for the laptop and not as a third GPU. In other words, you can buy an Alienware laptop model with a single GTX 660M or another model that has two GPUs in either CrossFire or SLI

As for your heat concern, all mobile GPUs are clocked down version of their desktop counterparts. For example, the desktop HD 7970 has a core clock of 925MHz and a memory clock of 1375MHz. Its mobile version, the HD 7970M might have a core clock around 600MHz/700MHz and memory clock around 1000MHz.

Lowering the clocks result to lower power consumption and lower heat produced making mobile GPUs ideal for laptops.

As for the option of adding water cooling, it's possible but that would require some very ingenuous design. If you want to cool your laptop, you may use notebook/laptop coolers with fans. They may not be as efficient as direct contact coolers but still they help reduce temps of your laptop.

I hope I made things more clear for you :)
